UMBRA NIHIL (Finland) – The Borderland Rituals CD OUT NOW!!!

After their debut album „Gnoia“ (2005, Firedoom Records), the Finnish band UMBRA NIHIL comes with a brand new album „The Borderland Rituals“. 5 long obscure, frosty compositions of hypnotic doom metal.

The album's initial concept was inspired by themes introduced to some of us by the writer William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) in the brooding horror novel The House on the Borderland. In order to achieve a suitable claustrophobic sound and eerie, forbidding atmosphere the album has been recorded in an isolated and quarantined abandoned house on the inbred borderland, sullenly crafting the band's sound into a more organic and gelatinous direction.

In epileptic fits of pathetic rage the album betimes raises a trembling and arthritic pale fist at the uncaring cosmos-at-large and its malevolent nightside entities, which haunt hapless Mankind with unfathomable purpose - or lack thereof. Mostly, however, the aural ambience resolves in resigned rudderless levitation towards inevitable mental and physical disintegration.

Additional astrality has been contributed by Tuomas M. Mäkelä of the ambient band Jääportit.

15 YEARS OF EPIDEMIE RECORDS

It seems to be almost unbelievable, but it´s truth. 15 years ago, EPIDEMIE RECORDS released its first title (MC compilation of Czech and Slovak bands called EPIDEMIE 001). Nowadays, we prepare two new releases with the catalogue number 065 and 066. Looking back I can see a lot of things. In spite of our releases I remember hundreds of concerts and festivals, thousands of listened albums and demos, also discovering various genres and meeting a huge quantity of people all over the world. Great time indeed! So I would like to thank all the bands we cooperated with, all the people helping us with the label, and especially you all who support us buying our stuff. Without you all the work would lose its sense. Thank you all!!!

AARNI (Finland) - Tohcoth

Tohcoth is Aarni’s second full-length album and contains a plethora of musical styles ranging from various subgenres of doom metal, 70’s prog and folk to ambient, while remaining charmingly guitar-driven. A number of chord progressions and melodies have been implemented so as to cause beneficial effects in the listener (hopefully) according to the principles of ‘sacred geometry’. You may find the album’s overall atmosphere somewhat proggy, experimental and freaked-out. The themes on ‘Tohcoth’ consist of occultism and futuristic theories, brain-change and collective & personal liberation…with added Lovecraftian, alchemical, mythological, Discordian and Thelemic content. Languages featured this time include English, Latin, Finnish and Enochian. Tohcoth also features what may be the first ever recording of “The Battle Hymn of the Eristocracy” from the cult classic book Principia Discordia. As on Aarni’s critically and popularily acclaimed debut album Bathos, the Finnish media personality Sampo Marjomaa has contributed guest vocals and VV from the band Umbra Nihil plays most of the drums. The album has been lovingly dedicated to the late great Robert Anton Wilson. You will probably find ‘Tohcoth’ more brutal than your mom, more sensitive than your dad, more wicked than your uncle, more Kabbalistic than Madonna, straighter than Manowar, more proggy than Slayer, more balanced than Jesus or Moses or Mohammed, more educated than Hitler, more scientific than Dawkins, more honest than any government and perhaps less emo than you.

ARC (Canada) - Arkhangelsk

ARC is a Canadian trio (Aidan Baker - guitars, flutes, tapeloops, Richard Baker - drumkit, percussion, & Christopher Kukiel - percussion) playing tribal guitar drone ambient with psychedelic and post – rock elements and very hypnotic sound. Their brand new album Arkhangelsk brings 4 compositions in 67 minutes and comes in nice 6 panels digisleeve and is limited on 600 copies. Arkhangelsk was recorded in Toronto, Canada in December 2007 in two separate sessions. The first consisted of improvisational performances on drumset and guitar and the second consisted of layering percussion, electronics, and woodwind tracks on those original drum/guitar tracks. Both sessions were done in real-time in single takes with a minimum of post-production editing or manipulation in an effort to capture the spontaneity of the performances. As such, Arkhangelsk maintains the typical ARC sound while simultaneously exploring more adventurous poly-rhythms and textures, combining influence/inspiration from such artists as Flyer Saucer Attack, The Boredoms, Tribes of Neurot, and Rapoon.
